The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) introduced a new revalidation method on April 16, 2016. Whether you are a practising nurse, midwife or nurse associate or provide support to practice through the leadership of policy, research, or education, each registrant must pass the revalidation exam every three years to stay on the NMC registry.
NOTE: You must pay an annual fee for retention annually to NMC to maintain your membership.
Essential guidelines for NMC revalidation
In preparation for revalidation, before you begin on the revalidation process, Make sure to fulfil essential requirements. For example:
- Sign up for NMC Online and check your NMC revalidation date
- Make yourself familiar with the NMC Code and always keep renewal in your head.
- Talk to colleagues and discuss your weaknesses in your growth and any development issues with your supervisor.
Revalidation requirements guidelines
There are the following requirements for revalidation for such as:
- Five pieces of feedback on your practice and five written reflections.
- Completion of 35 hours of continuous professional education (CPD), 20 of which must be participative.
- Discuss your thoughts with another NMC registered participant.
- You must get confirmation that you’ve completed the requirements for revalidation from the appropriate person.
Don’t forget to:
- Complete 450 hours of practice (900 if midwife and nurse registrant) and pay the annual NMC registration fee.
- Provide a declaration of health and character and a proof of professional indemnity.

Feedback comes from many sources for example:
- Patient’s career, service users, students, teachers, colleagues, or researchers
- Team performance reports, as well as severe reviews of the events
- Individual supervision, one-to-one meetings, as well as annual assessments.
- Note down the details of your feedback and how you utilised it to enhance your practice.

Completion of 35 hours of continuous professional education (CPD) for NMC revalidation
The 35 hours you earn can comprise:
- Activities where you can learn by yourself or in group activities that allow you to remember by yourself or with others, whether face-to-face or
- Attending workshops, events for learning, or attending conferences
- Reviewing and reading a book shadowing a colleague, or taking part in a group exercise gathering
- Required training if it is pertinent to your profession.
Keep all documentation of your CPD activities and document this on your NMC template.
NMC Reflective discussion
It is possible to have your reflections with your line manager (NMC registered) or with another NMC registered participant. However, It should be held in person and include notes in writing on Code and feedback, or CPD. You can also attend a practice-related occasion.
It is essential to fill out the NMC form and make sure that the NMC person you spoke with has signed, dated and written down their names, the PIN, email addresses, and postcode. Moreover, a video conference can be permitted in the event of a need.
Confirmation for completion of revalidation requirements
A suitable confirmer will be required to verify that you’ve met all requirements for revalidation. Therefore, the confirmer can ask questions if they’re unsure that you’ve completed the requirements.
- Decide if you’re fit enough to practice or verify the information and evidence in your portfolio.
- Check the character and health or professional indemnity arrangements requirements.
However, the confirmation forms are available on the NMC website to register your confirmation. Keep the confirmation form in either electronic or paper format.
